Control volume by using the +/- buttons of the smartphone. Also while screen is off.
Enable to use the +/- buttons of the smartphone to control volume or maybe switch track. Also while screen is off.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, this is not something that is easily doable in Android. It is doable, but for an app like this, the battery drainage would not be worth it (like it often is with media player apps).
However, a workaround would be to activate the Hardware volume override in settings, and also check “Keep screen on”.
OLD MESSAGE:
Note: Already partially implemented; Settings => General => Hardware volume buttons.
However, the current implementation does only work when the app is active (and in front). I can make it work while the app is “minimized” too, but I cannot reliably make it work when the screen is off.

Have you perhaps looked at or tried the Amazon mp3 app? That kind of integration would be awesome!
